Late 1990,there was a buzz of Vince McMahon starting a new bodybuilding federation. Many people thought that he had a lot of nerve to pit himself against the fathers of bodybuilding,Joe & Ben Weider. I thought it to be a great idea. Pay Per View competitions, and media coverage. Fabulous!! Being that Titan Sports is based in Stamford,Ct. and the WWF Wrestlers make appearances in the Southern Connecticut area, maybe the bodybuilders would do the same. Bring the sport to the masses! Wonderful!
On January 30,1991,The World Bodybuilding Federation was born. Just like the thirteen colonies made a young America, thirteen elite bodybuilders made the WBF. Johnnie Morrant,Vince Comerford,David Dearth,Gary Strydom,Troy Zuccolotto,Danny Padilla,Jim Quinn,Mike Quinn,Mike Christian,Tony Pearson,Aaron Baker, and Berry De Mey were the stars of a brand new federation.
Berry graced the cover of Bodybuilding Lifestyles four times and was the subject of a "Steamy" poster. This time was great for me as a fan. I got to see Berry on a national televised program just about every Saturday. Since it seemed that all WBF'ers were banned from Weider publications, those were two less magazines to deal with. In the WBF magazine, not only were there almost always pictures and articles about Berry but they had these GREAT photo layouts. In the December 1991 issue,it featured Berry modeling clothes by LaTor. You would think that this was a copy of GQ! Except for the women in the layout with him,I thought it was great!
After 15 issues of Bodybuilding Lifestyles, about as many episodes of WBF Bodystars on the USA network, and only two competions later, the WBF disbanded . Most of the men returned to the I.F.B.B only to be met with a fine and in my opinion lower placings. But I guess that better than being banned for life.
